min_order_for_split() returns -EBUSY when the folio is truncated and
cannot be split. In commit 77008e1b2e ("mm/huge_memory: do not change
split_huge_page*() target order silently"), memory_failure() does not
handle it and pass -EBUSY to try_to_split_thp_page() directly.
try_to_split_thp_page() returns -EINVAL since -EBUSY becomes 0xfffffff0 as
new_order is unsigned int in __folio_split() and this large new_order is
rejected as an invalid input. The code does not cause a bug.
soft_offline_in_use_page() also uses min_order_for_split() but it always
passes 0 as new_order for split.
Fix it by making min_order_for_split() always return an order. When the
given folio is truncated, namely folio->mapping == NULL, return 0 and let
a subsequent split function handle the situation and return -EBUSY.
Add kernel-doc to min_order_for_split() to clarify its use.

can_split_folio() is just a refcount comparison, making sure only the
split caller holds an extra pin. Open code it with
folio_expected_ref_count() != folio_ref_count() - 1. For the extra_pins
used by folio_ref_freeze(), add folio_cache_ref_count() to calculate it.
Also replace folio_expected_ref_count() with folio_cache_ref_count() used
by folio_ref_unfreeze(), since they are returning the same values when a
folio is frozen and folio_cache_ref_count() does not have unnecessary
folio_mapcount() in its implementation.

Patch series "Improve folio split related functions", v4.
This patchset improves several folio split related functions to avoid
future misuse. The changes are:
1. Consolidated folio splittable checks by moving truncated folio check,
huge zero folio check, and writeback folio check into
folio_split_supported(). Changed the function return type. Renamed it
to folio_check_splittable() for clarification.
2. Replaced can_split_folio() with open coded folio_expected_ref_count()
and folio_ref_count() and introduced folio_cache_ref_count().
3. Changed min_order_for_split() to always return an order.
4. Fixed folio split stats counting.
Motivation
==========
This is based on Wei's observation[1] and solves several potential
issues:
1. Dereferencing NULL folio->mapping in try_folio_split_to_order() if it
is called on truncated folios.
2. Not handling of negative return value of min_order_for_split() in
mm/memory-failure.c
There is no bug in the current code.
This patch (of 4):
folio_split_supported() used in try_folio_split_to_order() requires
folio->mapping to be non NULL, but current try_folio_split_to_order() does
not check it. There is no issue in the current code, since
try_folio_split_to_order() is only used in truncate_inode_partial_folio(),
where folio->mapping is not NULL.
To prevent future misuse, move folio->mapping NULL check (i.e., folio is
truncated) into folio_split_supported(). Since folio->mapping NULL check
returns -EBUSY and folio_split_supported() == false means -EINVAL, change
folio_split_supported() return type from bool to int and return error
numbers accordingly. Rename folio_split_supported() to
folio_check_splittable() to match the return type change.
While at it, move is_huge_zero_folio() check and folio_test_writeback()
check into folio_check_splittable() and add kernel-doc.
Remove all warnings inside folio_check_splittable() and give warnings
in __folio_split() instead, so that bool warns parameter can be removed.

Unmapped was added as a parameter to __folio_split() and related call
sites to support splitting of folios already in the midst of a migration.
This special case arose for device private folio migration since during
migration there could be a disconnect between source and destination on
the folio size.
Introduce folio_split_unmapped() to handle this special case. Also
refactor code and add __folio_freeze_and_split_unmapped() helper that is
common to both __folio_split() and folio_split_unmapped().
This in turn removes the special casing introduced by the unmapped
parameter in __folio_split().

Similar to list_lru, the split queue is relatively independent and does
not need to be reparented along with objcg and LRU folios (holding objcg
lock and lru lock). So let's apply the similar mechanism as list_lru to
reparent the split queue separately when memcg is offine.
This is also a preparation for reparenting LRU folios.

Update copy_huge_pmd() and change_huge_pmd() to use
pmd_is_valid_softleaf() - as this checks for the only valid non-present
huge PMD states.
Also update mm/debug_vm_pgtable.c to explicitly test for a valid leaf PMD
entry (which it was not before, which was incorrect), and have it test
against pmd_is_huge() and pmd_is_valid_softleaf() rather than
is_swap_pmd().
With these changes done there are no further users of is_swap_pmd(), so
remove it.

The leaf entry PMD case is confusing as only migration entries and device
private entries are valid at PMD level, not true swap entries.
We repeatedly perform checks of the form is_swap_pmd() || pmd_trans_huge()
which is itself confusing - it implies that leaf entries at PMD level
exist and are different from huge entries.
Address this confusion by introduced pmd_is_huge() which checks for either
case. Sadly due to header dependency issues (huge_mm.h is included very
early on in headers and cannot really rely on much else) we cannot use
pmd_is_valid_softleaf() here.
However since these are the only valid, handled cases the function is
still achieving what it intends to do.
We then replace all instances of is_swap_pmd() || pmd_trans_huge() with
pmd_is_huge() invocations and adjust logic accordingly to accommodate
this.
No functional change intended.

uniform_split_supported() and non_uniform_split_supported() share
significantly similar logic.
The only functional difference is that uniform_split_supported() includes
an additional check on the requested @new_order.
The reason for this check comes from the following two aspects:
* some file system or swap cache just supports order-0 folio
* the behavioral difference between uniform/non-uniform split
The behavioral difference between uniform split and non-uniform:
* uniform split splits folio directly to @new_order
* non-uniform split creates after-split folios with orders from
folio_order(folio) - 1 to new_order.
This means for non-uniform split or !new_order split we should check the
file system and swap cache respectively.
This commit unifies the logic and merge the two functions into a single
combined helper, removing redundant code and simplifying the split
support checking mechanism.

Patch series "mm/huge_memory: Define split_type and consolidate split

This two-patch series focuses on improving code clarity and removing
redundancy in the huge memory handling logic related to folio splitting.
The series is based on an original proposal to merge two significantly
identical functions that check folio split support[1]. During this
process, we found an opportunity to improve readability by explicitly
defining the split types.
Patch 1: define split_type and use it
Patch 2: merge uniform_split_supported() and non_uniform_split_supported()
This patch (of 2):
We currently handle two distinct types of large folio splitting:
* uniform split
* non-uniform split
Differentiating between these types using a simple boolean variable is not
obvious and can harm code readability.
This commit introduces enum split_type to explicitly define these two
types. Replacing the existing boolean variable with this enumeration
significantly improves code clarity and expressiveness when dealing with
folio splitting logic.
No functional change is expected.

Patch series "Optimize folio split in memory failure", v5.
This patchset optimizes folio split operations in memory failure code by
always splitting a folio to min_order_for_split() to minimize unusable
pages, even if min_order_for_split() is non zero and memory failure code
would take the failed path eventually for a successfully split folio.
This means instead of making the entire original folio unusable memory
failure code would only make its after-split folio, which has order of
min_order_for_split() and contains HWPoison page, unusable.
For soft offline case, since the original folio is still accessible, no
split is performed if the folio cannot be split to order-0 to prevent
potential performance loss.
In addition, add split_huge_page_to_order() to improve code readability
and fix kernel-doc comment format for folio_split() and other related
functions.
Background
==========
This patchset is a follow-up of "[PATCH v3] mm/huge_memory: do not change
split_huge_page*() target order silently."[1] and [PATCH v4]
mm/huge_memory: preserve PG_has_hwpoisoned if a folio is split to >0
order[2], since both are separated out as hotfixes. It improves how
memory failure code handles large block size(LBS) folios with
min_order_for_split() > 0. By splitting a large folio containing HW
poisoned pages to min_order_for_split(), the after-split folios without HW
poisoned pages could be freed for reuse. To achieve this, folio split
code needs to set has_hwpoisoned on after-split folios containing HW
poisoned pages and it is done in the hotfix in [2].
This patchset includes:

Currently we install pmd folio with map_anon_folio_pmd() in
__do_huge_pmd_anonymous_page() and do_huge_zero_wp_pmd(). While in
collapse_huge_page(), it is done with identical code except statistics
adjustment.
Unify the process with map_anon_folio_pmd() to install pmd folio. Split
it to map_anon_folio_pmd_pf() and map_anon_folio_pmd_nopf() to be used in
page fault or not respectively.
No functional change is intended.

Implement migrate_vma_split_pages() to handle THP splitting during the
migration process when destination cannot allocate compound pages.
This addresses the common scenario where migrate_vma_setup() succeeds with
MIGRATE_PFN_COMPOUND pages, but the destination device cannot allocate
large pages during the migration phase.
Key changes:
- migrate_vma_split_pages(): Split already-isolated pages during migration
- Enhanced folio_split() and __split_unmapped_folio() with isolated
parameter to avoid redundant unmap/remap operations
This provides a fallback mechansim to ensure migration succeeds even when
large page allocation fails at the destination.

Implement CPU fault handling for zone device THP entries through
do_huge_pmd_device_private(), enabling transparent migration of
device-private large pages back to system memory on CPU access.
When the CPU accesses a zone device THP entry, the fault handler calls the
device driver's migrate_to_ram() callback to migrate the entire large page
back to system memory.

The page faults may be spurious because of the racy access to the page
table. For example, a non-populated virtual page is accessed on 2
CPUs simultaneously, thus the page faults are triggered on both CPUs.
However, it's possible that one CPU (say CPU A) cannot find the reason
for the page fault if the other CPU (say CPU B) has changed the page
table before the PTE is checked on CPU A. Most of the time, the
spurious page faults can be ignored safely. However, if the page
fault is for the write access, it's possible that a stale read-only
TLB entry exists in the local CPU and needs to be flushed on some
architectures. This is called the spurious page fault fixing.
In the current kernel, there is spurious fault fixing support for pte,
but not for huge pmd because no architectures need it. But in the
next patch in the series, we will change the write protection fault
handling logic on arm64, so that some stale huge pmd entries may
remain in the TLB. These entries need to be flushed via the huge pmd
spurious fault fixing mechanism.

Page cache folios from a file system that support large block size (LBS)
can have minimal folio order greater than 0, thus a high order folio might
not be able to be split down to order-0. Commit e220917fa5 ("mm: split
a folio in minimum folio order chunks") bumps the target order of
split_huge_page*() to the minimum allowed order when splitting a LBS
folio. This causes confusion for some split_huge_page*() callers like
memory failure handling code, since they expect after-split folios all
have order-0 when split succeeds but in reality get min_order_for_split()
order folios and give warnings.
Fix it by failing a split if the folio cannot be split to the target
order. Rename try_folio_split() to try_folio_split_to_order() to reflect
the added new_order parameter. Remove its unused list parameter.
[The test poisons LBS folios, which cannot be split to order-0 folios, and
also tries to poison all memory. The non split LBS folios take more
memory than the test anticipated, leading to OOM. The patch fixed the
kernel warning and the test needs some change to avoid OOM.]

split_huge_page_to_list_[to_order](), split_huge_page() and
try_folio_split() return 0 on success and error codes on failure.
When THP is disabled, these functions return 0 indicating success even
though an error code should be returned as it is not possible to split a
folio when THP is disabled.
Make all these functions return -EINVAL to indicate failure instead of 0.
As large folios depend on CONFIG_THP, issue warning as this function
should not be called without a large folio.

Calling is_huge_zero_folio(NULL) should not be legal - it makes no sense,
and a different (theoretical) implementation may dereference the pointer.
But currently, lacking any explicit documentation, this call is possible.
But if somebody really passes NULL, the function should not return true -
this isn't the huge zero folio after all! However, if the
`huge_zero_folio` hasn't been allocated yet, it's NULL, and
is_huge_zero_folio(NULL) just happens to return true, which is a lie.
This weird side effect prevented me from reproducing a kernel crash that
occurred when the elements of a folio_batch were NULL - since
folios_put_refs() skips huge zero folios, this sometimes causes a crash,
but sometimes does not. For debugging, it is better to reveal such bugs
reliably and not hide them behind random preconditions like "has the huge
zero folio already been created?"
To improve detection of such bugs, David Hildenbrand suggested adding a
VM_WARN_ON_ONCE().

Let's allow for making MADV_COLLAPSE succeed on areas that neither have
VM_HUGEPAGE nor VM_NOHUGEPAGE when we have THP disabled unless explicitly
advised (PR_THP_DISABLE_EXCEPT_ADVISED).
MADV_COLLAPSE is a clear advice that we want to collapse.
Note that we still respect the VM_NOHUGEPAGE flag, just like
MADV_COLLAPSE always does. So consequently, MADV_COLLAPSE is now only
refused on VM_NOHUGEPAGE with PR_THP_DISABLE_EXCEPT_ADVISED,
including for shmem.

When determining which THP orders are eligible for a VMA mapping, we have
previously specified tva_flags, however it turns out it is really not
necessary to treat these as flags.
Rather, we distinguish between distinct modes.
The only case where we previously combined flags was with
TVA_ENFORCE_SYSFS, but we can avoid this by observing that this is the
default, except for MADV_COLLAPSE or an edge cases in
collapse_pte_mapped_thp() and hugepage_vma_revalidate(), and adding a mode
specifically for this case - TVA_FORCED_COLLAPSE.
We have:
* smaps handling for showing "THPeligible"
* Pagefault handling
* khugepaged handling
* Forced collapse handling: primarily MADV_COLLAPSE, but also for
an edge case in collapse_pte_mapped_thp()
Disregarding the edge cases, we only want to ignore sysfs settings only
when we are forcing a collapse through MADV_COLLAPSE, otherwise we want to
enforce it, hence this patch does the following flag to enum conversions:
* TVA_SMAPS | TVA_ENFORCE_SYSFS -> TVA_SMAPS
* TVA_IN_PF | TVA_ENFORCE_SYSFS -> TVA_PAGEFAULT
* TVA_ENFORCE_SYSFS -> TVA_KHUGEPAGED
* 0 -> TVA_FORCED_COLLAPSE
With this change, we immediately know if we are in the forced collapse
case, which will be valuable next.

Patch series "prctl: extend PR_SET_THP_DISABLE to only provide THPs when
advised", v5.
This will allow individual processes to opt-out of THP = "always" into THP
= "madvise", without affecting other workloads on the system. This has
been extensively discussed on the mailing list and has been summarized
very well by David in the first patch which also includes the links to
alternatives, please refer to the first patch commit message for the
motivation for this series.
Patch 1 adds the PR_THP_DISABLE_EXCEPT_ADVISED flag to implement this,
along with the MMF changes.
Patch 2 is a cleanup patch for tva_flags that will allow the forced
collapse case to be transmitted to vma_thp_disabled (which is done in
patch 3).
Patch 4 adds documentation for PR_SET_THP_DISABLE/PR_GET_THP_DISABLE.
Patches 6-7 implement the selftests for PR_SET_THP_DISABLE for completely
disabling THPs (old behaviour) and only enabling it at advise
(PR_THP_DISABLE_EXCEPT_ADVISED).
This patch (of 7):
People want to make use of more THPs, for example, moving from the "never"
system policy to "madvise", or from "madvise" to "always".
While this is great news for every THP desperately waiting to get
allocated out there, apparently there are some workloads that require a
bit of care during that transition: individual processes may need to
opt-out from this behavior for various reasons, and this should be
permitted without needing to make all other workloads on the system
similarly opt-out.
The following scenarios are imaginable:
(1) Switch from "none" system policy to "madvise"/"always", but keep THPs
disabled for selected workloads.
(2) Stay at "none" system policy, but enable THPs for selected
workloads, making only these workloads use the "madvise" or "always"
policy.
(3) Switch from "madvise" system policy to "always", but keep the
"madvise" policy for selected workloads: allocate THPs only when
advised.
(4) Stay at "madvise" system policy, but enable THPs even when not advised
for selected workloads -- "always" policy.
Once can emulate (2) through (1), by setting the system policy to
"madvise"/"always" while disabling THPs for all processes that don't want
THPs. It requires configuring all workloads, but that is a user-space
problem to sort out.
(4) can be emulated through (3) in a similar way.
Back when (1) was relevant in the past, as people started enabling THPs,
we added PR_SET_THP_DISABLE, so relevant workloads that were not ready yet
(i.e., used by Redis) were able to just disable THPs completely. Redis
still implements the option to use this interface to disable THPs
completely.
With PR_SET_THP_DISABLE, we added a way to force-disable THPs for a
workload -- a process, including fork+exec'ed process hierarchy. That
essentially made us support (1): simply disable THPs for all workloads
that are not ready for THPs yet, while still enabling THPs system-wide.
The quest for handling (3) and (4) started, but current approaches
(completely new prctl, options to set other policies per process,
alternatives to prctl -- mctrl, cgroup handling) don't look particularly
promising. Likely, the future will use bpf or something similar to
implement better policies, in particular to also make better decisions
about THP sizes to use, but this will certainly take a while as that work
just started.
Long story short: a simple enable/disable is not really suitable for the
future, so we're not willing to add completely new toggles.
While we could emulate (3)+(4) through (1)+(2) by simply disabling THPs
completely for these processes, this is a step backwards, because these
processes can no longer allocate THPs in regions where THPs were
explicitly advised: regions flagged as VM_HUGEPAGE. Apparently, that
imposes a problem for relevant workloads, because "not THPs" is certainly
worse than "THPs only when advised".
Could we simply relax PR_SET_THP_DISABLE, to "disable THPs unless not
explicitly advised by the app through MAD_HUGEPAGE"? *maybe*, but this
would change the documented semantics quite a bit, and the versatility to
use it for debugging purposes, so I am not 100% sure that is what we want
-- although it would certainly be much easier.
So instead, as an easy way forward for (3) and (4), add an option to
make PR_SET_THP_DISABLE disable *less* THPs for a process.
In essence, this patch:
(A) Adds PR_THP_DISABLE_EXCEPT_ADVISED, to be used as a flag in arg3
of prctl(PR_SET_THP_DISABLE) when disabling THPs (arg2 != 0).
prctl(PR_SET_THP_DISABLE, 1, PR_THP_DISABLE_EXCEPT_ADVISED).
(B) Makes prctl(PR_GET_THP_DISABLE) return 3 if
PR_THP_DISABLE_EXCEPT_ADVISED was set while disabling.
Previously, it would return 1 if THPs were disabled completely. Now
it returns the set flags as well: 3 if PR_THP_DISABLE_EXCEPT_ADVISED
was set.
(C) Renames MMF_DISABLE_THP to MMF_DISABLE_THP_COMPLETELY, to express
the semantics clearly.
Fortunately, there are only two instances outside of prctl() code.
(D) Adds MMF_DISABLE_THP_EXCEPT_ADVISED to express "no THP except for VMAs
with VM_HUGEPAGE" -- essentially "thp=madvise" behavior
Fortunately, we only have to extend vma_thp_disabled().
(E) Indicates "THP_enabled: 0" in /proc/pid/status only if THPs are
disabled completely
Only indicating that THPs are disabled when they are really disabled
completely, not only partially.
For now, we don't add another interface to obtained whether THPs
are disabled partially (PR_THP_DISABLE_EXCEPT_ADVISED was set). If
ever required, we could add a new entry.
The documented semantics in the man page for PR_SET_THP_DISABLE "is
inherited by a child created via fork(2) and is preserved across
execve(2)" is maintained. This behavior, for example, allows for
disabling THPs for a workload through the launching process (e.g., systemd
where we fork() a helper process to then exec()).
For now, MADV_COLLAPSE will *fail* in regions without VM_HUGEPAGE and
VM_NOHUGEPAGE. As MADV_COLLAPSE is a clear advise that user space thinks
a THP is a good idea, we'll enable that separately next (requiring a bit
of cleanup first).
There is currently not way to prevent that a process will not issue
PR_SET_THP_DISABLE itself to re-enable THP. There are not really known
users for re-enabling it, and it's against the purpose of the original
interface. So if ever required, we could investigate just forbidding to
re-enable them, or make this somehow configurable.

As part of the effort to move to mm->flags becoming a bitmap field,
convert existing users to making use of the mm_flags_*() accessors which
will, when the conversion is complete, be the only means of accessing
mm_struct flags.
This will result in the debug output being that of a bitmap output, which
will result in a minor change here, but since this is for debug only, this
should have no bearing.
Otherwise, no functional changes intended.

The callers of mm_get_huge_zero_folio() have access to a mm struct and the
lifetime of the huge_zero_folio is tied to the lifetime of the mm struct.
largest_zero_folio() will give access to huge_zero_folio when
PERSISTENT_HUGE_ZERO_FOLIO config option is enabled for callers that do
not want to tie the lifetime to a mm struct. This is very useful for
filesystem and block layers where the request completions can be async and
there is no guarantee on the mm struct lifetime.
This function will return a ZERO_PAGE folio if PERSISTENT_HUGE_ZERO_FOLIO
is disabled or if we failed to allocate a huge_zero_folio during early
init.

Many places in the kernel need to zero out larger chunks, but the maximum
segment that can be zeroed out at a time by ZERO_PAGE is limited by
PAGE_SIZE.
This is especially annoying in block devices and filesystems where
multiple ZERO_PAGEs are attached to the bio in different bvecs. With
multipage bvec support in block layer, it is much more efficient to send
out larger zero pages as a part of single bvec.
This concern was raised during the review of adding Large Block Size
support to XFS[1][2].
Usually huge_zero_folio is allocated on demand, and it will be deallocated
by the shrinker if there are no users of it left. At moment,
huge_zero_folio infrastructure refcount is tied to the process lifetime
that created it. This might not work for bio layer as the completions can
be async and the process that created the huge_zero_folio might no longer
be alive. And, one of the main points that came up during discussion is
to have something bigger than zero page as a drop-in replacement.
Add a config option PERSISTENT_HUGE_ZERO_FOLIO that will result in
allocating the huge zero folio during early init and never free the memory
by disabling the shrinker. This makes using the huge_zero_folio without
having to pass any mm struct and does not tie the lifetime of the zero
folio to anything, making it a drop-in replacement for ZERO_PAGE.
If PERSISTENT_HUGE_ZERO_FOLIO config option is enabled, then
mm_get_huge_zero_folio() will simply return the allocated page instead of
dynamically allocating a new PMD page.
Use this option carefully in resource constrained systems as it uses one
full PMD sized page for zeroing purposes.

Patch series "mm: introduce snapshot_page()", v3.
This series introduces snapshot_page(), a helper function that can be used
to create a snapshot of a struct page and its associated struct folio.
This function is intended to help callers with a consistent view of a a
folio while reducing the chance of encountering partially updated or
inconsistent state, such as during folio splitting which could lead to
crashes and BUG_ON()s being triggered.
This patch (of 4):
Let's avoid working with the PMD when not required. If
vm_normal_page_pmd() would be called on something that is not a present
pmd, it would already be a bug (pfn possibly garbage).
While at it, let's support passing in any pfn covered by the huge zero
folio by masking off PFN bits -- which should be rather cheap.

The madvise code has for the longest time had very confusing code around
the 'prev' VMA pointer passed around various functions which, in all cases
except madvise_update_vma(), is unused and instead simply updated as soon
as the function is invoked.
To compound the confusion, the prev pointer is also used to indicate to
the caller that the mmap lock has been dropped and that we can therefore
not safely access the end of the current VMA (which might have been
updated by madvise_update_vma()).
Clear up this confusion by not setting prev = vma anywhere except in
madvise_walk_vmas(), update all references to prev which will always be
equal to vma after madvise_vma_behavior() is invoked, and adding a flag to
indicate that the lock has been dropped to make this explicit.
Additionally, drop a redundant BUG_ON() from madvise_collapse(), which is
simply reiterating the BUG_ON(mmap_locked) above it (note that BUG_ON() is
not appropriate here, but we leave existing code as-is).
We finally adjust the madvise_walk_vmas() logic to be a little clearer -
delaying the assignment of the end of the range to the start of the new
range until the last moment and handling the lock being dropped scenario
immediately.
Additionally add some explanatory comments.

DAX was the only thing that created pmd_devmap and pud_devmap entries
however it no longer does as DAX pages are now refcounted normally and
pXd_trans_huge() returns true for those. Therefore checking both
pXd_devmap and pXd_trans_huge() is redundant and the former can be removed
without changing behaviour as it will always be false.

GUP uses pXX_devmap() calls to see if it needs to a get a reference on the
associated pgmap data structure to ensure the pages won't go away.
However it's a driver responsibility to ensure that if pages are mapped
(ie. discoverable by GUP) that they are not offlined or removed from the
memmap so there is no need to hold a reference on the pgmap data structure
to ensure this.
Furthermore mappings with PFN_DEV are no longer created, hence this
effectively dead code anyway so can be removed.

vm_flags_t vs. unsigned long. This prevents us from changing the type of
vm_flags_t in the future and is simply not correct, so correct this.
While this results in rather a lot of churn, it is a critical
pre-requisite for a future planned change to VMA flag type.
Additionally, update VMA userland tests to account for the changes.
To make review easier and to break things into smaller parts, driver and
architecture-specific changes is left for a subsequent commit.
The code has been adjusted to cascade the changes across all calling code
as far as is needed.
We will adjust architecture-specific and driver code in a subsequent patch.
Overall, this patch does not introduce any functional change.

Instead of splitting the large folio uniformly during truncation, try to
use buddy allocator like folio_split() at the start and the end of a
truncation range to minimize the number of resulting folios if it is
supported. try_folio_split() is introduced to use folio_split() if
supported and it falls back to uniform split otherwise.
For example, to truncate a order-4 folio
[0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ..., 15]
between [3, 10] (inclusive), folio_split() splits the folio at 3 to
[0,1], [2], [3], [4..7], [8..15] and [3], [4..7] can be dropped and
[8..15] is kept with zeros in [8..10], then another folio_split() is
done at 10, so [8..10] can be dropped.
One possible optimization is to make folio_split() to split a folio based
on a given range, like [3..10] above. But that complicates folio_split(),
so it will be investigated when necessary.

Currently DAX folio/page reference counts are managed differently to
normal pages. To allow these to be managed the same as normal pages
introduce vmf_insert_folio_pmd. This will map the entire PMD-sized folio
and take references as it would for a normally mapped page.
This is distinct from the current mechanism, vmf_insert_pfn_pmd, which
simply inserts a special devmap PMD entry into the page table without
holding a reference to the page for the mapping.
It is not currently useful to implement a more generic vmf_insert_folio()
which selects the correct behaviour based on folio_order(). This is
because PTE faults require only a subpage of the folio to be PTE mapped
rather than the entire folio. It would be possible to add this context
somewhere but callers already need to handle PTE faults and PMD faults
separately so a more generic function is not useful.

The adj_start calculation has been a constant source of confusion in the
VMA merge code.
There are two cases to consider, one where we adjust the start of the
vmg->middle VMA (i.e. the vmg->__adjust_middle_start merge flag is set),
in which case adj_start is calculated as:
(1) adj_start = vmg->end - vmg->middle->vm_start
And the case where we adjust the start of the vmg->next VMA (i.e. the
vmg->__adjust_next_start merge flag is set), in which case adj_start is
calculated as:
(2) adj_start = -(vmg->middle->vm_end - vmg->end)
We apply (1) thusly:
vmg->middle->vm_start =
vmg->middle->vm_start + vmg->end - vmg->middle->vm_start
Which simplifies to:
vmg->middle->vm_start = vmg->end
Similarly, we apply (2) as:
vmg->next->vm_start =
vmg->next->vm_start + -(vmg->middle->vm_end - vmg->end)
Noting that for these VMAs to be mergeable vmg->middle->vm_end ==
vmg->next->vm_start and so this simplifies to:
vmg->next->vm_start =
vmg->next->vm_start + -(vmg->next->vm_start - vmg->end)
Which simplifies to:
vmg->next->vm_start = vmg->end
Therefore in each case, we simply need to adjust the start of the VMA to
vmg->end (!) and can do away with this adj_start calculation. The only
caveat is that we must ensure we update the vm_pgoff field correctly.
We therefore abstract this entire calculation to a new function
vmg_adjust_set_range() which performs this calculation and sets the
adjusted VMA's new range using the general vma_set_range() function.
We also must update vma_adjust_trans_huge() which expects the
now-abstracted adj_start parameter. It turns out this is wholly
unnecessary.
In vma_adjust_trans_huge() the relevant code is:

The only case where this is relevant is when vmg->__adjust_middle_start is
specified (in which case adj_next would have been positive), i.e. the one
in which the vma specified is vmg->prev and this the sought 'next' VMA
would be vmg->middle.
We can therefore eliminate the find_vma() invocation altogether and simply
provide the vmg->middle VMA in this instance, or NULL otherwise.
Again we have an adj_next offset calculation:
next->vm_start + vmg->end - vmg->middle->vm_start
Where next == vmg->middle this simplifies to vmg->end as previously
demonstrated.
Therefore nstart is equal to vmg->end, which is already passed to
vma_adjust_trans_huge() via the 'end' parameter and so this code (rather
delightfully) simplifies to:
if (next)
split_huge_pmd_if_needed(next, end);
With these changes in place, it becomes silly for commit_merge() to return
vmg->target, as it is always the same and threaded through vmg, so we
finally change commit_merge() to return an error value once again.
This patch has no change in functional behaviour.

Currently, large folio swap-in is supported, but we lack a method to
analyze their success ratio. Similar to anon_fault_fallback, we introduce
per-order mTHP swpin_fallback and swpin_fallback_charge counters for
calculating their success ratio. The new counters are located at:

Added a new MTHP_STAT_ZSWPOUT entry to the sysfs transparent_hugepage
stats so that successful large folio zswap stores can be accounted under
the per-order sysfs "zswpout" stats:
/sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/hugepages-*kB/stats/zswpout
Other non-zswap swap device swap-out events will be counted under
the existing sysfs "swpout" stats:

The types of mm flags are now far beyond the core dump related features.
This patch moves mm flags from linux/sched/coredump.h to linux/mm_types.h.
The linux/sched/coredump.h has include the mm_types.h, so the C files
related to coredump does not need to change head file inclusion. In
addition, the inclusion of sched/coredump.h now can be deleted from the C
files that irrelevant to core dump.

Patch series "mm: don't install PMD mappings when THPs are disabled by the
hw/process/vma".
During testing, it was found that we can get PMD mappings in processes
where THP (and more precisely, PMD mappings) are supposed to be disabled.
While it works as expected for anon+shmem, the pagecache is the
problematic bit.
For s390 KVM this currently means that a VM backed by a file located on
filesystem with large folio support can crash when KVM tries accessing the
problematic page, because the readahead logic might decide to use a
PMD-sized THP and faulting it into the page tables will install a PMD
mapping, something that s390 KVM cannot tolerate.
This might also be a problem with HW that does not support PMD mappings,
but I did not try reproducing it.
Fix it by respecting the ways to disable THPs when deciding whether we can
install a PMD mapping. khugepaged should already be taking care of not
collapsing if THPs are effectively disabled for the hw/process/vma.

This enables PFNMAPs to be mapped at either pmd/pud layers. Generalize the
dax case into vma_is_special_huge() so as to cover both. Meanwhile, rename

It constantly returns false since 2017. One assertion is added in 2019 but
it should never have triggered, IOW it means what is checked should be
asserted instead.
If it didn't exist for 7 years maybe it's good idea to remove it and only
add it when it comes.

Currently folio->_deferred_list is used to keep track of partially_mapped
folios that are going to be split under memory pressure. In the next
patch, all THPs that are faulted in and collapsed by khugepaged are also
going to be tracked using _deferred_list.
This patch introduces a pageflag to be able to distinguish between
partially mapped folios and others in the deferred_list at split time in
deferred_split_scan. Its needed as __folio_remove_rmap decrements
_mapcount, _large_mapcount and _entire_mapcount, hence it won't be
possible to distinguish between partially mapped folios and others in
deferred_split_scan.
Eventhough it introduces an extra flag to track if the folio is partially
mapped, there is no functional change intended with this patch and the
flag is not useful in this patch itself, it will become useful in the next
patch when _deferred_list has non partially mapped folios.
