Magnus Lindholm 403d1338a4 mm: pgtable: fix pte_swp_exclusive
Make pte_swp_exclusive return bool instead of int.  This will better
reflect how pte_swp_exclusive is actually used in the code.

This fixes swap/swapoff problems on Alpha due pte_swp_exclusive not
returning correct values when _PAGE_SWP_EXCLUSIVE bit resides in upper
32-bits of PTE (like on alpha).

Linus Torvalds 00c010e130 - The 11 patch series "Add folio_mk_pte()" from Matthew Wilcox
simplifies the act of creating a pte which addresses the first page in a
   folio and reduces the amount of plumbing which architecture must
   implement to provide this.
 
 - The 8 patch series "Misc folio patches for 6.16" from Matthew Wilcox
   is a shower of largely unrelated folio infrastructure changes which
   clean things up and better prepare us for future work.
 
 - The 3 patch series "memory,x86,acpi: hotplug memory alignment
   advisement" from Gregory Price adds early-init code to prevent x86 from
   leaving physical memory unused when physical address regions are not
   aligned to memory block size.
 
 - The 2 patch series "mm/compaction: allow more aggressive proactive
   compaction" from Michal Clapinski provides some tuning of the (sadly,
   hard-coded (more sadly, not auto-tuned)) thresholds for our invokation
   of proactive compaction.  In a simple test case, the reduction of a guest
   VM's memory consumption was dramatic.
 
 - The 8 patch series "Minor cleanups and improvements to swap freeing
   code" from Kemeng Shi provides some code cleaups and a small efficiency
   improvement to this part of our swap handling code.
 
 - The 6 patch series "ptrace: introduce PTRACE_SET_SYSCALL_INFO API"
   from Dmitry Levin adds the ability for a ptracer to modify syscalls
   arguments.  At this time we can alter only "system call information that
   are used by strace system call tampering, namely, syscall number,
   syscall arguments, and syscall return value.
 
   This series should have been incorporated into mm.git's "non-MM"
   branch, but I goofed.
 
 - The 3 patch series "fs/proc: extend the PAGEMAP_SCAN ioctl to report
   guard regions" from Andrei Vagin extends the info returned by the
   PAGEMAP_SCAN ioctl against /proc/pid/pagemap.  This permits CRIU to more
   efficiently get at the info about guard regions.
 
 - The 2 patch series "Fix parameter passed to page_mapcount_is_type()"
   from Gavin Shan implements that fix.  No runtime effect is expected
   because validate_page_before_insert() happens to fix up this error.
 
 - The 3 patch series "kernel/events/uprobes: uprobe_write_opcode()
   rewrite" from David Hildenbrand basically brings uprobe text poking into
   the current decade.  Remove a bunch of hand-rolled implementation in
   favor of using more current facilities.
 
 - The 3 patch series "mm/ptdump: Drop assumption that pxd_val() is u64"
   from Anshuman Khandual provides enhancements and generalizations to the
   pte dumping code.  This might be needed when 128-bit Page Table
   Descriptors are enabled for ARM.
 
 - The 12 patch series "Always call constructor for kernel page tables"
   from Kevin Brodsky "ensures that the ctor/dtor is always called for
   kernel pgtables, as it already is for user pgtables".  This permits the
   addition of more functionality such as "insert hooks to protect page
   tables".  This change does result in various architectures performing
   unnecesary work, but this is fixed up where it is anticipated to occur.
 
 - The 9 patch series "Rust support for mm_struct, vm_area_struct, and
   mmap" from Alice Ryhl adds plumbing to permit Rust access to core MM
   structures.
 
 - The 3 patch series "fix incorrectly disallowed anonymous VMA merges"
   from Lorenzo Stoakes takes advantage of some VMA merging opportunities
   which we've been missing for 15 years.
 
 - The 4 patch series "mm/madvise: batch tlb flushes for MADV_DONTNEED
   and MADV_FREE" from SeongJae Park optimizes process_madvise()'s TLB
   flushing.  Instead of flushing each address range in the provided iovec,
   we batch the flushing across all the iovec entries.  The syscall's cost
   was approximately halved with a microbenchmark which was designed to
   load this particular operation.
 
 - The 6 patch series "Track node vacancy to reduce worst case allocation
   counts" from Sidhartha Kumar makes the maple tree smarter about its node
   preallocation.  stress-ng mmap performance increased by single-digit
   percentages and the amount of unnecessarily preallocated memory was
   dramaticelly reduced.
 
 - The 3 patch series "mm/gup: Minor fix, cleanup and improvements" from
   Baoquan He removes a few unnecessary things which Baoquan noted when
   reading the code.

Kuniyuki Iwashima 77cbe1a6d8 af_unix: Introduce SO_PASSRIGHTS.
As long as recvmsg() or recvmmsg() is used with cmsg, it is not
possible to avoid receiving file descriptors via SCM_RIGHTS.

This behaviour has occasionally been flagged as problematic, as
it can be (ab)used to trigger DoS during close(), for example, by
passing a FUSE-controlled fd or a hung NFS fd.

For instance, as noted on the uAPI Group page [0], an untrusted peer
could send a file descriptor pointing to a hung NFS mount and then
close it.  Once the receiver calls recvmsg() with msg_control, the
descriptor is automatically installed, and then the responsibility
for the final close() now falls on the receiver, which may result
in blocking the process for a long time.

Regarding this, systemd calls cmsg_close_all() [1] after each
recvmsg() to close() unwanted file descriptors sent via SCM_RIGHTS.

However, this cannot work around the issue at all, because the final
fput() may still occur on the receiver's side once sendmsg() with
SCM_RIGHTS succeeds.  Also, even filtering by LSM at recvmsg() does
not work for the same reason.

Thus, we need a better way to refuse SCM_RIGHTS at sendmsg().

Let's introduce SO_PASSRIGHTS to disable SCM_RIGHTS.

Note that this option is enabled by default for backward
compatibility.

Matthew Wilcox (Oracle) cb5b13cd6c mm: introduce a common definition of mk_pte()
Most architectures simply call pfn_pte().  Centralise that as the normal
definition and remove the definition of mk_pte() from the architectures
which have either that exact definition or something similar.

 with inconsistent semantics of ioread64/iowrite64 that were causing

 have PC-style ISA devices that are not memory mapped (x86, uml, m68k-q40

Arnd Bergmann 5c35018a54 alpha: stop using asm-generic/iomap.h
Alpha has custom definitions for ioread64()/iowrite64(), which now
don't exist in the lib/iomap.c variant. This is an endless source
of build failures, since alpha tries to share a couple of function
declarations.

Change alpha to have its own prototypes that match the definitions
in arch/alpha/kerne/io.c instead.

Ivan Kokshaysky 0a0f7362b0 alpha: make stack 16-byte aligned (most cases)
The problem is that GCC expects 16-byte alignment of the incoming stack
since early 2004, as Maciej found out [1]:
  Having actually dug speculatively I can see that the psABI was changed in
 GCC 3.5 with commit e5e10fb4a350 ("re PR target/14539 (128-bit long double
 improperly aligned)") back in Mar 2004, when the stack pointer alignment
 was increased from 8 bytes to 16 bytes, and arch/alpha/kernel/entry.S has
 various suspicious stack pointer adjustments, starting with SP_OFF which
 is not a whole multiple of 16.

Also, as Magnus noted, "ALPHA Calling Standard" [2] required the same:
 D.3.1 Stack Alignment
  This standard requires that stacks be octaword aligned at the time a
  new procedure is invoked.

However:
- the "normal" kernel stack is always misaligned by 8 bytes, thanks to
  the odd number of 64-bit words in 'struct pt_regs', which is the very
  first thing pushed onto the kernel thread stack;
- syscall, fault, interrupt etc. handlers may, or may not, receive aligned
  stack depending on numerous factors.

Somehow we got away with it until recently, when we ended up with
a stack corruption in kernel/smp.c:smp_call_function_single() due to
its use of 32-byte aligned local data and the compiler doing clever
things allocating it on the stack.

This adds padding between the PAL-saved and kernel-saved registers
so that 'struct pt_regs' have an even number of 64-bit words.
This makes the stack properly aligned for most of the kernel
code, except two handlers which need special threatment.

Note: struct pt_regs doesn't belong in uapi/asm; this should be fixed,
but let's put this off until later.

In [2] it was pointed out that parts of setarch weren't working
properly on alpha because it has it's own SET_PERSONALITY
implementation.  In the discussion that followed Richard Henderson
pointed out that the 32bit pointer support for alpha was never
completed.

Fix this by removing alpha's 32bit pointer support.

As a bit of paranoia refuse to execute any alpha binaries that have
the EF_ALPHA_32BIT flag set.  Just in case someone somewhere has
binaries that try to use alpha's 32bit pointer support.

Lorenzo Stoakes 662df3e5c3 mm: madvise: implement lightweight guard page mechanism
Implement a new lightweight guard page feature, that is regions of
userland virtual memory that, when accessed, cause a fatal signal to
arise.

Currently users must establish PROT_NONE ranges to achieve this.

However this is very costly memory-wise - we need a VMA for each and every
one of these regions AND they become unmergeable with surrounding VMAs.

In addition repeated mmap() calls require repeated kernel context switches
and contention of the mmap lock to install these ranges, potentially also
having to unmap memory if installed over existing ranges.

The lightweight guard approach eliminates the VMA cost altogether - rather
than establishing a PROT_NONE VMA, it operates at the level of page table
entries - establishing PTE markers such that accesses to them cause a
fault followed by a SIGSGEV signal being raised.

This is achieved through the PTE marker mechanism, which we have already
extended to provide PTE_MARKER_GUARD, which we installed via the generic
page walking logic which we have extended for this purpose.

These guard ranges are established with MADV_GUARD_INSTALL.  If the range
in which they are installed contain any existing mappings, they will be
zapped, i.e.  free the range and unmap memory (thus mimicking the
behaviour of MADV_DONTNEED in this respect).

Any existing guard entries will be left untouched.  There is therefore no
nesting of guarded pages.

Guarded ranges are NOT cleared by MADV_DONTNEED nor MADV_FREE (in both
instances the memory range may be reused at which point a user would
expect guards to still be in place), but they are cleared via
MADV_GUARD_REMOVE, process teardown or unmapping of memory ranges.

The guard property can be removed from ranges via MADV_GUARD_REMOVE.  The
ranges over which this is applied, should they contain non-guard entries,
will be untouched, with only guard entries being cleared.

We permit this operation on anonymous memory only, and only VMAs which are
non-special, non-huge and not mlock()'d (if we permitted this we'd have to
drop locked pages which would be rather counterintuitive).

Racing page faults can cause repeated attempts to install guard pages that
are interrupted, result in a zap, and this process can end up being
repeated.  If this happens more than would be expected in normal
operation, we rescind locks and retry the whole thing, which avoids lock
contention in this scenario.

page_to_phys is duplicated by all architectures, and from some strange
reason placed in <asm/io.h> where it doesn't fit at all.

phys_to_page is only provided by a few architectures despite having a lot
of open coded users.

Provide generic versions in <asm-generic/memory_model.h> to make these
helpers more easily usable.

Note with this patch powerpc loses the CONFIG_DEBUG_VIRTUAL pfn_valid
check.  It will be added back in a generic version later.

Vadim Fedorenko 4aecca4c76 net_tstamp: add SCM_TS_OPT_ID to provide OPT_ID in control message
SOF_TIMESTAMPING_OPT_ID socket option flag gives a way to correlate TX
timestamps and packets sent via socket. Unfortunately, there is no way
to reliably predict socket timestamp ID value in case of error returned
by sendmsg. For UDP sockets it's impossible because of lockless
nature of UDP transmit, several threads may send packets in parallel. In
case of RAW sockets MSG_MORE option makes things complicated. More
details are in the conversation [1].
This patch adds new control message type to give user-space
software an opportunity to control the mapping between packets and
values by providing ID with each sendmsg for UDP sockets.
The documentation is also added in this patch.

Mina Almasry 8f0b3cc9a4 tcp: RX path for devmem TCP
In tcp_recvmsg_locked(), detect if the skb being received by the user
is a devmem skb. In this case - if the user provided the MSG_SOCK_DEVMEM
flag - pass it to tcp_recvmsg_devmem() for custom handling.

tcp_recvmsg_devmem() copies any data in the skb header to the linear
buffer, and returns a cmsg to the user indicating the number of bytes
returned in the linear buffer.

tcp_recvmsg_devmem() then loops over the unaccessible devmem skb frags,
and returns to the user a cmsg_devmem indicating the location of the
data in the dmabuf device memory. cmsg_devmem contains this information:

1. the offset into the dmabuf where the payload starts. 'frag_offset'.
2. the size of the frag. 'frag_size'.
3. an opaque token 'frag_token' to return to the kernel when the buffer
is to be released.

The pages awaiting freeing are stored in the newly added
sk->sk_user_frags, and each page passed to userspace is get_page()'d.
This reference is dropped once the userspace indicates that it is
done reading this page.  All pages are released when the socket is
destroyed.

Compile-testing the crypto/caam driver on alpha showed a pre-existing
problem on alpha with iowrite64be() missing:

The prototypes were added a while ago when we started using asm-generic/io.h,
but the implementation was still missing. At some point the ioread64/iowrite64
helpers were added, but the big-endian versions are still missing, and
the generic version (using readq/writeq) is would not work here.

Change it to wrap ioread64()/iowrite64() instead.

Arnd Bergmann a4184174be alpha: drop pre-EV56 support
All EV4 machines are already gone, and the remaining EV5 based machines
all support the slightly more modern EV56 generation as well.
Debian only supports EV56 and later.

Drop both of these and build kernels optimized for EV56 and higher
when the "generic" options is selected, tuning for an out-of-order
EV6 pipeline, same as Debian userspace.

Since this was the only supported architecture without 8-bit and
16-bit stores, common kernel code no longer has to worry about
aligning struct members, and existing workarounds from the block
and tty layers can be removed.

The alpha memory management code no longer needs an abstraction
for the differences between EV4 and EV5+.

Baoquan He 026246f114 arch/*/io.h: remove ioremap_uc in some architectures
ioremap_uc() is only meaningful on old x86-32 systems with the PAT
extension, and on ia64 with its slightly unconventional ioremap()
behavior. So remove the ioremap_uc() definition in architecutures
other than x86 and ia64. These architectures all have asm-generic/io.h
included and will have the default ioremap_uc() definition which
returns NULL.

This changes the existing behaviour, while no need to worry about
any breakage because in the only callsite of ioremap_uc(), code
has been adjusted to eliminate the impact. Please see
atyfb_setup_generic() of drivers/video/fbdev/aty/atyfb_base.c.

If any new invocation of ioremap_uc() need be added, please consider
using ioremap() intead or adding a ARCH specific version if necessary.

  CET consists of two related security features: shadow stacks and
  indirect branch tracking. This series implements just the shadow stack
  part of this feature, and just for userspace.

  The main use case for shadow stack is providing protection against
  return oriented programming attacks. It works by maintaining a
  secondary (shadow) stack using a special memory type that has
  protections against modification. When executing a CALL instruction,
  the processor pushes the return address to both the normal stack and
  to the special permission shadow stack. Upon RET, the processor pops
  the shadow stack copy and compares it to the normal stack copy.

Matthew Wilcox (Oracle) 203b7b6aad mm: rationalise flush_icache_pages() and flush_icache_page()
Move the default (no-op) implementation of flush_icache_pages() to
<linux/cacheflush.h> from <asm-generic/cacheflush.h>.  Remove the
flush_icache_page() wrapper from each architecture into
<linux/cacheflush.h>.

Arnd Bergmann 87382eadde PCI/sysfs: Move declarations to linux/pci.h
A couple of architectures build the __weak versions of
pci_create_resource_files() and pci_remove_resource_files() but don't
have prototypes for these, which causes warnings:
